DR. CALDWELL B. ESSELSTYN, JR.

Discover the connection between coronary artery disease and cultures which thrive on plant-based nutrition--and learn how you can influence your own health!

Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., received his A.B. from Yale University in 1956 and his M.D. from Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1961.  In 1956, he received a gold medal in rowing at the Olympic Games. In 1968, as an Army surgeon in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star.  He was trained as a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic and has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1961. He was President of the Staff and a member of the board of governors. He was chairman of the Breast Cancer Task Force and Head of the Section of Thyroid and Parathyroid Disease. In 2005 he became the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine.  He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Association in 2009. In 2013 he received Yale University's George Herbert Walker Bush Award for Lifetime Achievement.  In 2016 he received the Case Western Reserve Medical School Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Esselstyn has also received the 2015 Plantrician Project Luminary Award, and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. His scientific publications number over 150. His pioneering research is summarized in his best selling Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. In July 2014 his study of 200 patients confirms an even larger group can be adherent to plant based nutrition and achieve the same significant arrest and reversal of disease. 

Currently he directs the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Reversal Program at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute.

NEAL D. BARNARD, MD, FACC

Tackling cardiovascular risk factors:  understanding how nutrition influences health, and how to make dietary changes easy for yourself and your family

Dr. Barnard is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and President of the Physicians Committee. Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University and completed his residency at the same institution. Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, chronic pain, and hormonal conditions, including a major study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care. He is a Board member of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and an Alternate Delegate to the AMA’s House of Delegates. In 2018, he received the Medical Society’s Distinguished Service Award.

Patricio Garcia de Paredes

The journey of plaque from a unique macrobiotic, oriental, energetic perspective, based on observations on food and lifestyle

Patricio is a founding board member of the Macrobiotic Global Institute and the founder and director of Macrobiotic School Japan (MSJ), an international education center. He is an educator, author and cooking instructor. Patricio worked as a professional chef and has engaged in various enterprises to promote a plant-based food culture that contributes to the health of people and the planet. He was introduced to macrobiotics as a child in his native Spain and is a graduate of the Kushi Institute in the United States. He served as the education director and principal teacher at the Kushi Institute of Japan. Patricio has trained chefs from the Ritz Carlton, Westin, Sha Wellness Clinic and other hotel chains and restaurants to implement macrobiotic foods and menus. In 2023, he founded and serves as the director and main teacher at Global Macrobiotics School, where he has partnered with schools in Malaysia, China and Vietnam to provide macrobiotic education and promote healthy sustainable lifestyles.

Sheri-Lynn DeMaris

Sheri-Lynn DeMaris, M. Ed., is the founder of Macro Magic and a founding board member of the Macrobiotic Global Institute. She is a macrobiotic teacher and cookbook author who has taught at restaurants and cooking schools throughout the United States and Europe. She has consulted with chefs at top-rated restaurants, including the Ritz Carlton and the Williamsburg Inn, and has shared her knowledge with medical professionals at cutting-edge medical/health programs including the University of California San Diego School of Integrative Medicine and Hahnemann University.

Sheri-Lynn is a Level 4 graduate of the Kushi Institute. She is the author of the book Macro Magic for Kids and Parents and is the host of an alternative health television cooking show Macro Magic. She holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and completed post-graduate studies in counseling from Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

Marilee Nelson

Bringing heart health into your home by creating a healthy, supportive, home environment

Marilee is a Board Certified Nutritionist, Certified Building-Biologist, Building Materials Specialist and is on the advisory board for Documenting Hope. For 30 years, she has worked with the chronically ill, children with disabilities, and the mold and chemically injured. She lives in the Texas Hill Country with her husband. Marilee and two like-minded colleagues started their company, Branch Basics, to help people create healthy homes and experience the power of pure by removing toxins from your environment.
